Drinking Diaries
We drink for different reasons: to quench thirst, to loosen up, because it tastes good, to enhance a meal, because we're addicted, as part of a ceremony, to celebrate, to mourn. We drink when we're happy. We drink when we're sad. And then there are the non-drinkers, for whom abstaining may be as much of an issue as drinking. This is a place where women can spill their drinking stories--from lamp-swinging hilarity to bottle-under-the-bed despair. At DRINKING DIARIES, you will read, and be able to share the details, the deep questions, the wide and wild range of experiences that pertain to women and alcohol.We’re Going to BlogHer 2010!

When my older sister came to visit, I had a dinner party, and she drank too much red wine. In the middle of the party, she ran to answer her cell phone and fell flat on her face in the living room, smashing her cheekbone till it was black and blue. She went in the living room and sobbed to her boyfriend on the phone. Embarrassing.
When my dad was sick in the hospital, my mother was so distraught she would go out for lunch and come back smashed. I could hear her creating a scene in the hallways among patients and nurses when she was on her way back to his room. It was awful on so many levels, and i don’t know who was more embarrassed–my dad or I.
My husband.
We were on a business/fun trip to the SuperBowl. Late at night my husband came back to the hotel room drunk, stood out on the hotel room balcony and started shouting down to the people at the main entrance of the hotel (participating in the fun, I guess). The owner of the corporation was in the suite two doors down and heard everything – we were on the 7th floor.
God yes! Once at a boss-mandated after work drinks session, a woman I barely knew at work, and who was somewhat senior to me, spilled all about her personal life — unsolicited.
The next time I saw her at work she made a point of shaking my hand and saying “Nice meeting you,” as if she hadn’t sat across from me monologuing under the influence of three Martinis.
I’d never have brought up her indescretions — but this was her way of telling me : That conversation never happened.
That’s the the only 30-something incident I can recall. But in my teens and twenties? Embarrassments are too numerous to list here!
My boyfriend has been an alcoholic for the entire ten years we have been together. There are so many embarassing moments that I have endured, but if I had to narrow it down, the most embarrasing moment was on a vacation to Cozumel. We were at a private island party and he drank so much tequila he was singing and being stupid on the bus ride back to the cruise ship. I actually have a picture of him talking to a horse. All night people who had attended that party kept asking if he was alright. They did not know he was past out in the cabin and I had emptied his pockets and gambled with his money!
