I have just discovered this blog and was about to give up......all those sad stories about guilt and fear. Finally, a happy story about drinking! This is more the norm, from my experience. My husband and I are about the age of Sara's parents. We have a group of friends we meet every year or so around the world, all our age, for a week of cooking, drinking and tons of laughs. Sometimes people's kids join in. One year our son brought a girl who complained to him, "there's something wrong here. I'm only 25 years old, but your parents' friends are too wild for me." We took it as a compliment and they went their separate ways.

This is brilliant. My mother is more fun than most of my friends put together, and every time we're together - usually for our standing weekly dinner - it's an absolute blast. Not only does she feed me, love me and listen to me kvetch, she also makes The Best Manhattans. Period.

I feel lucky to have the mom I do. I hope that should I ever become a mother - bite my tongue - I'm half the woman she is. (I'm still working on The Best Manhattans part.)

Awesome post! We have this relationship with our close friends who are also are neighbors! Lots of laughs, and lots of alcohol. Although, since our children are under the legal drinking age we emphasize that everyone is a. eating b. not driving and c. having a good time (no fights, no tears, etc.)

I love this post. I too want a second round because I want to evening to keep going, if I'm with my parents or friends. I am disappointed in my lightweight's body that can't really handle multiple rounds because I want the evening to last--much more than I want the altered state--and Sara's right; it just doesn't work with seltzer.

I think my parents and your parents are soul mates, karmic twins. I often have more fun with them than some of my friends!
