This is really good, Sari, very brave and also nicely sly, the way you conclusively demonstrate but never really admit that you were the codependent equal of those despised Alanoners.

My own years in NYC Alanon, maybe because I was with a sober alcoholic not a drinking one, or maybe because I was dead set on fixing my broken self, were powerful and eye-opening for me, part of a real rebirth. But I do remember the whiners.

Glad you got the guy out of your system.

Amazing writing, I loved this piece Sari and can, without question, relate to this article from both perspectives.

Journal writing as therapy, a great alternative, and it's always there to review in times of weakness.A reminder, in your own words, of your true feelings.

A strong piece of writing -- about the not-easy-to-write-about subject of erasing oneself for the sake of another. Great sassy voice throughout, something I always love about Sari's writing.

I also love the smell of liquor on a man's breath (cigarettes too, believe it or not!) - and nobody abused alcohol in my family. Maybe just being conditioned to expecting a guy to smell like booze from starting to party at the same age as starting to fool around. Nothing turns me off more than toothpaste!
